Christmas 2026: When to Order UK Gifts and Ship Them Abroad
Christmas 2026: When to Order UK Gifts and Ship Them Abroad
TL;DR: Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, and December is the busiest month of the year for carriers and customs. If you're planning international Christmas shipping from the UK, the safest plan is to work backwards: shop by early December, consolidate as soon as everything arrives, and ship with time to spare, choosing express for distant destinations. Check your carrier's official last shipping dates, and remember that a gift sent straight to family may arrive with import charges for them to pay.
Last updated: 21 October 2026. We will add carriers' 2026 last shipping dates as they are published.
Work Backwards from Christmas Day
Every Christmas parcel from Britain goes through four stages, and each one needs time:
1. Store to our warehouse: most British retailers deliver in a day or two, but December volumes can stretch that.
2. Our warehouse: every parcel is photographed and weighed on arrival. Shipping requests made before 14:00 GMT on a working day are processed the same day.
3. Transit: express services fly and are the fastest. Economy services are slower, especially to distant destinations.
4. Customs and delivery: the stage most likely to slow down in December, as customs offices and local couriers handle far more parcels than usual.
Start from the date you want the gift in someone's hands, and work back through those four stages. Our guide to why international parcels get delayed explains what can slow each one down.
Our Christmas Opening Days
Our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse is closed on Thursday 24 December, Friday 25 December and Monday 28 December 2026, and, as usual, at weekends. Parcels and shipping requests received on those days are handled on the next working day, so the last working day to request shipping before Christmas is Wednesday 23 December. For most destinations, that is far too late for Christmas delivery, so plan well ahead.
A Simple Christmas Shipping Timeline
Late October to mid-November: buy anything you already know you want, especially items that sell out, such as advent calendars and limited gift sets. Our advent calendar guide covers the timing.
Black Friday, 27 November, and Cyber Monday, 30 November: the biggest sale weekend of the run-up. Order early in the weekend so parcels reach us quickly. See our Black Friday 2026 guide.
Early December: aim to have everything for distant destinations, such as Australia, Asia or the Americas, at our warehouse, especially if you plan to use an economy service.
Mid-December: for Europe and other nearby destinations, express services give you the most room. Check the carrier's last shipping date for your country before you request shipping.
Christmas week: if you've missed the dates, consider shipping for the New Year instead.
Check the Carriers' Last Shipping Dates
Each carrier publishes its own Christmas deadlines by country and service, and they differ between Royal Mail, Parcelforce, UPS, DHL, FedEx and DPD. Those dates are when a parcel must leave Britain, so add the time it takes to reach our warehouse and be processed. We'll add a table of 2026 dates to this guide as carriers publish them.
What to Know by Destination
EU: from 1 November 2026, EU customs add a €2 handling fee per item and require Product Identifiers on declarations, so Christmas parcels to the EU are the first to go through the new rules. Keep order confirmations until delivery. See our 2026 EU customs guide.
USA: there is no duty-free threshold, so every parcel is subject to import duty. With Royal Mail, charges are paid upfront, which suits gifts. See our USA forwarding guide.
Australia, Asia and the Americas: distance matters most here. Plan for the earliest timeline and choose express if you're buying after Black Friday.
Everywhere else: our guide to import rules by region covers what changes once your parcel leaves Britain.
Express or Economy for Christmas?
For most of the year, economy services are good value. In December, the extra days they take, plus busy customs offices, can push a parcel past Christmas. For distant destinations, or for anything bought after Black Friday, express is usually worth the extra cost. Compare both in our shipping calculator.
Sending Christmas Gifts Straight to Family Abroad
You can ship directly to a relative's address instead of your own. Two things to know first.
Import charges on delivery
In most countries, the recipient pays any duty and VAT on delivery, and a gift that arrives with a bill isn't the surprise you intended. With Royal Mail, charges for the USA, Germany, Denmark and Luxembourg are paid upfront, so the recipient pays nothing on delivery. Use our customs duty estimator to check likely charges for other destinations.
Gift allowances
Many countries have duty relief for gifts, but it usually applies only to personal gifts sent between private individuals, not to goods bought from a shop and shipped to someone. Declare every item honestly, with its real value.
Christmas Pitfalls to Avoid
Gift sets with perfume or aerosols: very common at Christmas, and they can't be forwarded. Check the box contents.
Power banks and spare batteries: popular stocking fillers, but they can't be shipped. See our lithium battery guide.
Electronics as gifts: laptops, phones and headphones can be forwarded as restricted items, without cover against loss or damage, so insure valuable gifts independently.
Fragile decorations and ceramics: read our fragile items guide first.
Vague descriptions: "Christmas presents" isn't a customs description. List each item.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should I order UK gifts to arrive abroad by Christmas?
As early as you can. For distant destinations, aim to have everything at our warehouse by early December. For Europe, mid-December can work with an express service. Always check your carrier's last shipping date.
Is your warehouse open over Christmas?
We're closed on 24, 25 and 28 December 2026, and at weekends. The last working day to request shipping before Christmas is Wednesday 23 December.
Is express worth it for Christmas parcels?
Usually, yes, for distant destinations or late orders, because December customs and delivery networks are much busier than normal.
Can I send a gift directly to someone abroad?
Yes. Enter their address when you request shipping. In most countries they will pay any import charges on delivery, unless you ship with Royal Mail to the USA, Germany, Denmark or Luxembourg, where charges are paid upfront.
Are Christmas gifts duty-free?
Not usually when they're bought from a shop. Gift allowances generally apply to personal gifts between private individuals. Declare each item honestly.
Can I send perfume gift sets for Christmas?
No. Perfume and aerosols can't be forwarded, so check gift sets before you buy.
