Parcel Forwarding from the UK to Japan

Japan has a sophisticated consumer market with a deep appreciation for British heritage, quality craftsmanship and iconic UK brands. From Barbour and Hunter to Fortnum and Mason, Wedgwood and Burberry — UK goods carry genuine cachet in Japan. Many UK retailers do not ship directly to Japan or charge high international delivery fees that make individual purchases impractical. Send2Hub gives you a real UK delivery address at our secure warehouse in Stoke-on-Trent. Shop any UK retailer, consolidate your purchases to save on shipping costs, and we forward everything to your address in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Yokohama or anywhere in Japan.

Shop Any UK Retailer and Ship to Japan

Your free Send2Hub UK address gives you access to the full range of UK online retail — including stores that do not offer direct shipping to Japan. Popular UK brands that Send2Hub customers in Japan regularly shop include Barbour, Hunter, Burberry, Ted Baker, The Body Shop, Boots, Marks and Spencer, ASOS, Fortnum and Mason, Wedgwood, Amazon UK and many more. Use your Send2Hub address at checkout as you would any UK delivery address — your parcel arrives at our warehouse, is automatically photographed, weighed and measured on arrival, and full details appear in your real-time account dashboard immediately.

Save money with parcel consolidation. Hold multiple UK purchases in free temporary storage and combine them into a single outbound shipment before forwarding to Japan. Consolidation typically reduces international shipping costs by 40-60% — one shipment, one customs declaration, one delivery. Keeping your consolidated shipment below Japan's de minimis threshold can also eliminate import taxes entirely. Learn more on our parcel consolidation page.

If a UK retailer does not accept your Japanese payment card or does not offer international checkout, our Shop & Ship service can purchase items on your behalf.

Japan Customs and Import Information

Japan's customs system is administered by Japan Customs under the Ministry of Finance. Japan is generally considered a straightforward destination for personal imports — with a clear de minimis threshold, a single consumption tax rate and a well-organised customs process. For most standard consumer goods from UK retailers, the import process is simple and predictable.

De Minimis Threshold

Shipments with a total customs value not exceeding JPY 10,000 (approximately £50) are generally exempt from both import customs duty and Japan Consumption Tax. Above this threshold, standard duty rates and 10% Consumption Tax apply. The de minimis threshold applies to the customs value of the goods — calculated on a CIF basis (cost + insurance + freight). There is no separate higher threshold for tax — both duty and consumption tax are exempt together below JPY 10,000.

Japan Consumption Tax (JCT)

Japan Consumption Tax (JCT) is applied at the standard rate of 10% on most imported goods above the JPY 10,000 threshold. A reduced rate of 8% applies to food and non-alcoholic beverages. JCT is calculated on the total import declaration value plus any applicable customs duty. For most standard consumer goods, clothing, cosmetics and homeware from UK retailers, JCT at 10% is the primary tax to account for. Use our worldwide customs duty estimator for an indication of charges.

Customs Duty Rates

Japan applies customs duties based on the HS tariff classification of goods. Duty rates vary by product category — many common consumer goods attract low or zero rates. Japan applies three rate types: the General Rate (standard MFN rate), a Temporary Rate (statutory override for certain products) and preferential rates under trade agreements. For most clothing, cosmetics, homeware and electronics from the UK, duty rates are typically between 0% and 10%.

UK-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement

The UK and Japan have a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) which entered into force in January 2021. Under the CEPA, goods that genuinely originate in the UK benefit from zero or reduced customs duty rates when imported into Japan — in many cases providing equal or better terms than the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement. To claim preferential rates, accurate documentation and a statement of origin must be included with the shipment. Goods manufactured outside the UK and forwarded via Send2Hub do not qualify for CEPA preferential rates.

Required Documentation

Standard documentation for customs clearance in Japan includes a commercial invoice with accurate item descriptions, HS codes and declared CIF values, a packing list and an air waybill or bill of lading. Send2Hub prepares all standard customs export documentation for every outbound shipment from our UK warehouse. Accurate declared values are essential — Japan Customs may request supporting documents if declared values appear inconsistent with market prices.

Restricted and Prohibited Items

Japan prohibits or restricts the import of weapons and ammunition, controlled substances, certain food and plant products, counterfeit goods and items infringing intellectual property rights. Certain food products require import certificates. Alcohol and tobacco attract specific excise taxes in addition to customs duty and JCT. Visit our prohibited and restricted items page for full details.

Frequently Asked Questions — UK to Japan Shipping

Can I shop UK retailers that don't ship to Japan?

Yes. Your free Send2Hub UK address gives you access to any UK retailer — including those that only ship domestically within the UK. Use your Send2Hub address at checkout, your parcel arrives at our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse and we forward it to Japan. If a UK retailer does not accept your Japanese payment card, our Shop & Ship service can purchase items on your behalf.

What is the duty-free threshold for imports to Japan?

Shipments with a customs value not exceeding JPY 10,000 (approximately £50) are exempt from both customs duty and Japan Consumption Tax. Above this threshold, standard duty rates plus 10% JCT apply. Both exemptions apply together — there is no separate higher threshold for tax only.

Does the UK-Japan trade agreement reduce customs duties?

Yes — for goods genuinely originating in the UK. The UK-Japan CEPA provides zero or reduced duty rates for qualifying UK-origin goods with proper documentation and a statement of origin. Goods manufactured outside the UK and forwarded via Send2Hub do not qualify for CEPA preferential rates.

Can I consolidate multiple orders before shipping to Japan?

Yes. Hold multiple parcels in free temporary storage and combine them into a single outbound shipment — saving 40-60% on shipping costs. Free storage: 30 days Individual, 45 days Business, 60 days Premium. If the total consolidated value stays below JPY 10,000, no import taxes apply at all.
